Review by Itsmeagain! for HJC MATTES & METALLICS IS-33 OPEN-FACE MOTORCYCLE HELMET (MEDIUM, MATTE BLACK)
Rating:
A reasonably priced, well made, DOT certified helmet. I wear the medium and it fits me well, but NEVER buy a helmet without trying it on for fit first, unless the seller has a good return policy. Even if measuring your head and going by a ‘fit chart’, there is a good chance the helmet won’t fit right.
I picked this white color because it stays cool longer in the sun, and it is more noticeable by cage drivers.
The helmet has vents to aid in cooling, and they work OK but nothing really special. Another reason I picked this helmet is that it is an ‘open face’ design that will stay cooler than an enclosed ‘full face’ helmet. I have never found a full face helmet that is even reasonably cool in the west Texas summer sun. Also, I don’t like the ‘crotch rocket’ look of those full face helmets. (I ride a cruiser.)
The clear face shield is especially nice, and it is fog-resistant. You must breath on the inside of this shield to fog it up when you first get it, THIS ACTIVATES THE ANTI-FOG COATING, and it shouldn’t fog after that. The shield is scratch resistant and is easy to replace if needed.
The flip down ‘smoked’ sun shield has 3 adjustments besides fully opened. The idea behind it is great, but it is only a light smoke color. It should be much darker to be really useful at shading the sun. As it is, I also have to wear sunglasses behind the sun shield on bright days.
The padding is well made and removeable for washing, and is replaceable. The padding snaps in place. There is room in the ear padding to install helmet speakers if you want your music, Bluetooth, GPS, 2-way communication, etc. while riding.
The helmet is about average for wind noise for an open face helmet. That is, you will hear some wind noise, and the faster you go the worse it gets. I always wear ear plugs to help prevent permanent hearing loss from wind noise. I am not picking on this particular helmet, ALL helmets have wind noise to varying degrees.
This had the DOT sticker on the back, and the DOT certification label inside, but the DOT sticker came off; that’s not a big deal as there is no legal requirement for the owner to keep any DOT (or other) label on or in the helmet after purchase. This can be a problem in a few states that require DOT helmets and the police are ignorant, they think the helmet must have the DOT sticker and label to be certified. There is no law that prevents the owner from removing or covering the sticker or inner label on his or her helmet, in fact a judge issued an injunction prohibiting the CHP from stopping riders just for not having a DOT sticker. Search >nhtsa dot stickers< for clarification. Once a helmet has been DOT certified, removing the labels does not de-certify it, since the owner does not have the authority to de-certify. The 2010 year model helmets will have the DOT sticker under a clear-coat, making it difficult to remove.
So, I would say overall this is a very good helmet, but the lightly ‘smoked’ sun visor, the ‘fair’ ventilation, and the ‘average’ wind noise level lower its rating. But at this price, you will not find a better helmet. Just be sure it fits, and you should be satisfied.

Are you looking for a helmet with a built in retractable sun, and face shield? Well after a lot of research I found what I was looking for at a great price. My wife doesn’t ride on my motorcycle much, but when she does she wants to be comfortable, and this helmet has everything you could want for an enjoyable ride. It’s not the best for cold weather rides, but it’s perfect for everything else.
