Half-Armor (Corsaletto)

Steel, blued, embossed and gilded, c. 1550
Italian (Lombardy)
made for a member of the Medici family in Florence, possbily Gian Giacomo, from the city of Marignano.
The laminated cuirass (combined backplate and breastplate), made of horizontally overlapping plates connected internally by straps and sling rivets, is of the type the Italians called anima because it could be hidden beneath the garment, like the human soul in the body. The laminated construction of this armor allows great freedom of movement. The open-faced infantry helmet is called a burgonet. The blued surface was obtained by subjecting the metal to temperatures ranging from 550 to 600 degrees Farenheit.

My mom is always talking about Le Pain Quotidien, but the French tartine is a far cry from a real open face sandwich, like this one from PS Diner on 38th street. I substituted fries for mashed potatoes.
Looking at this meal again, I am pretty sure that I will soon have a coronary.
The best open face sandwich I’ve ever had? Angelo’s in Ann Arbor.
